Djemba Djemba is blowing up the scene right now, and it couldn’t be happening to a more talented guy. His style as a producer is truly unique, and as a DJ his taste is impeccable. We may have said this about every FRE$H BLØØD artist so far, but Djemba truly defies genre.
A few months ago Djemba posted this gorgeous Fiona Apple remix, which we’ve had on repeat ever since. Right around the same time he posted this totally nasty mashup featuring Southern raunch queen Lady. Though both tunes feature contemporary female vocalists and were released in close proximity to one another, they couldn’t be more different. As Djemba’s bio puts it, his music is “born from a state of permanent contradiction.”
First and foremost, his tempos, which are the easiest way to define genre, are all over the place. Djemba’s vibe also runs the spectrum. Some of his tunes are smooth, some are straight up gangster, and many of them are all of the above. DD recently released the 2-track I Just Go EP, his debut release for Diplo‘s Mad Decent alt imprint, Jeffrees. The EP’s title track definitely falls on the smoother side of things, with pitched drum rolls spicing it up with a subtle trap flavor. Flip over to the b-side, however, and “Oh OK Yeah That’s Cool” gives you full-blown trap sh*t. You just never know what you’re gonna get with this guy.
Play On SoundcloudNo article about Djemba would be complete without a bit of a history lesson. Before he was a genre-bending trapster, Andrew Swanson was known as St. Andrew. He’s since retired that moniker, but you can find relics on his St. Andrew MySpace Page (woah, MySpace). These tunes certainly sound like Djemba, with a heavy helping of UK bass music influence, but they possess a more electro/french house vibe than his current endeavors.
As always, you should check out Djemba Djemba’s SoundCloud page. He’s a great resource for finding new music and fresh artists, so go dig through his mixes and follow him on Facebook, where he’s always posting smashing tunes by other emerging artists.
The DJZ/10 is a collection of ten DJs that we think you should know about now. Some of them are already familiar to you, others you may have never heard of. The list is not based on (1) a secret computer algorithm, (2) social media popularity, or (3) payola. Every month or so we get together to decide if somebody from the broader A…Z directory is about to break out and should be included in the DJZ/10, or if somebody already on the list, for that matter, is “phoning it in” and deserved to be replaced by another DJ who is more worthy.
