From Dec. 6 – 9, 2012 Miami will play host to the 11th annual Art Basel, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. The 65,000 people coming from around the world can get their rave on, too.
While the exhibition is usually known for attracting celebrities and their multi-million dollar art acquisitions, the Miami club scene has become a natural outlet for the best of today’s EDM. Here’s a rundown of places to be this weekend:
1. Tiesto
The Dalai Lama of EDM will be at the Lincoln Road Mall’s Guess Store on Saturday, December 8th. He is promoting his new line of EDM-inspired clothing. Expect throngs of fans clammoring for a chance to shake the EDM demigod’s hand or win tickets to see him in all his glory at LIV later that night.
2. Nicolas Jaar
Equally comfortable in a swanky night club or an art gallery exhibit, the electronic wunderkind will be performing back-to-back on Thursday and Friday. Presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Jaar will offer up a DJ set at the Bardot on Thursday followed by a live performance at the Mondrian South Beach the following day.
3. M.A.N.D.Y.
Philipp Jung & Patrick Bodmer (M.A.N.D.Y.) are back again with their Get Physical label showcase. The staple of Art Basel is teaming up with Toronto’s My Favorite Robot this year. Expect mind-blowing performances from Lee Curtiss, Blond:ish, Jared Simms, and Voytek Korrab.
4. Livio & Roby
The Un-Mute guys are the artist collective supporting Loco Dice’s Desolat label. Considering Richie Hawtin will be making an appearance at the exclusive LIV, this might be your only chance to get some bass-heavy funky grooves without getting a drink spilt on you.
5. Joy Orbison and Ben UFO
SAFE presents US debuts from Joy Orbison and Ben UFO (Hessle Audio) on Saturday, December 8th. Joy Orbison is the most talked about UK producer this year and Ben UFO, while only a DJ, has already made a name for himself by his amazing selections and technique.
6. Disco Haven
French Express Records has teamed up with Nightdrive Miami to provide a night of disco. On Saturday, December 8th at the Vagabond, a select few will have the chance to witness performances by Perseus, Chris Malinchak, Moon Boots, and Jonas Rathsman.
7. Fuck Art, Let’s Dance
Legendary DJ Harvey returns to present Art Basel’s premiere dance party. Fans will get bass-heavy-house and special debut performances by UK’s own Eats Everything and PillowTalk.
8. Pete Tong, Damian Lazarus, and Seth Troxler
Presented by Kontrol, this event will feature the best of underground dance music at Mansion nightclub. There’s not much to say about these heavyweights that their music doesn’t already tell. This is a party you don’t want to miss.
9. Basel Castle
The line-up this year includes Brenmar, Teengirl Fantasy, Twin Shadow, and Purity Ring, among others. On the Fool’s Gold stage, be sure to check out Dave 1 of Chromeo, Nick Catchdubs, and Oliver. While there are still some unannounced guests, its safe to say you’ll hear a lot of disco, hip-hop, and trap.
10. Flying Lotus
The Windish Agency is once again demonstrating its event prowess by throwing their own party and presenting a live set by FlyLo with added support from Zola Jesus and Dan Deacon at the Grand Central on Saturday.
Honorable Mention:
Bondax and Samo Sound Boy at the Garage.
The DJZ/10 is a collection of ten DJs that we think you should know about now. Some of them are already familiar to you, others you may have never heard of. The list is not based on (1) a secret computer algorithm, (2) social media popularity, or (3) payola. Every month or so we get together to decide if somebody from the broader A…Z directory is about to break out and should be included in the DJZ/10, or if somebody already on the list, for that matter, is “phoning it in” and deserved to be replaced by another DJ who is more worthy.
