The recently rechristened Snoop Lion dishes out a laid back dancehall jam with extra swagger courtesy of Major Lazer.
Snoop is no stranger to toking anthems, but “Lighters Up” is a decidedly different beast than his previous odes to every rapper’s favorite herb – more Peter Tosh than Nate Dogg.
The tune is yet another in a line of Lion/Lazer jams from Snoop’s upcoming album Reincarnation, and it solidifies this collaboration as a match made in heaven. Snoop Lion’s comfortably numb hook flows effortlessly across Diplo & crew’s deep brassy dub beat.
Snoop recently admitted that friends like Dr. Dre were having a hard time accepting his recent transformation, but now that they see that he’s not just fooling around with this reggae business, they’ve got his back. “Now [Dre] understands that I’m fully with it and I’m all in it to win it. So he gets it, and I got his support. He just didn’t understand it because I didn’t explain it to him. I wasn’t tryna keep it a secret; it just wasn’t time to unveil until now.”
The DJZ/10 is a collection of ten DJs that we think you should know about now. Some of them are already familiar to you, others you may have never heard of. The list is not based on (1) a secret computer algorithm, (2) social media popularity, or (3) payola. Every month or so we get together to decide if somebody from the broader A…Z directory is about to break out and should be included in the DJZ/10, or if somebody already on the list, for that matter, is “phoning it in” and deserved to be replaced by another DJ who is more worthy.
