EDM as a movement has plenty of detractors, but one of its most outsized supporters is longtime industry veteran and DJ Tommie Sunshine. The high profile remixer & producer recently argued with Ed Simons of The Chemical Brothers about the state of EDM and some of its biggest stars, including Swedish House Mafia.
Now, to prove his point even further, Sunshine has dropped a “Where’s the #EDM?” mixtape that is brimming with old-school Chicago flavor, from Jamie Jones to Duke Dumont and beyond. “I felt it necessary to make a mix that reflects my roots in Chicago & shows all the Underground nut jobs who berated me that I do, in fact, know the difference between EDM & House Music.”
Speculating on the progression of the EDM sound in 2013 for The Huffington Post, it seems no one is more optimistic than Tommie Sunshine…and to judge from the mixtape above, the man knows what he’s talking about.
The DJZ/10 is a collection of ten DJs that we think you should know about now. Some of them are already familiar to you, others you may have never heard of. The list is not based on (1) a secret computer algorithm, (2) social media popularity, or (3) payola. Every month or so we get together to decide if somebody from the broader A…Z directory is about to break out and should be included in the DJZ/10, or if somebody already on the list, for that matter, is “phoning it in” and deserved to be replaced by another DJ who is more worthy.×
